Aspen Crossing – Scenic Train Excursions In The Alberta – 4 Trips

Aspen Crossing - Scenic Train Excursions In The Alberta Prairies

Aspen Crossing is less than an hour southeast of Calgary in Mossleigh, Alberta.

It gives visitors the chance to ride a train through the beautiful Alberta grasslands while enjoying themed trips, great food, music, and more.

It has quickly become a popular day trip for people who live in Calgary and a big draw for tourists in southern Alberta.

Because Aspen Crossing is only 45 minutes from Calgary, it has become a popular place for both locals and people from other places to go and have fun.

After all, it gives people a chance to leave the city and enjoy Alberta’s famous grassland views.

Aspen Crossing has 12 themed train trips throughout the year.

These include Champagne Brunch, Sunday Special, Dinner Theatre, Prairie Tour, High Tea, Twilight Tour, Ales on Rails, Wine & Cheese, Circus Train, and Meals in the Field (there is also a Canada Day version on July 1st).

They also have the “Train of Terror” for Halloween and the “Aspen Crossing Polar Express,” which is a very popular ride during the Christmas season.

This is one of the best things for kids to do in Calgary in the winter. Here, you can see the whole schedule for Aspen Crossing.

Even though all of the things to do seemed fun, we chose one of their champagne brunch tours. Before the train trip started, we got there an hour early to see what else they had to offer.

Still, Aspen Crossing has a lot more to offer than just a beautiful train ride. They also have a garden centre, an escape room, a gift shop, two restaurants, a campground with tent and RV sites, and three very unique and beautiful railway caboose rooms.

When it was time to leave, we all gathered to hear the conductor talk about the history of Alberta and the train we would be riding that day. I noticed that the ages of the people on the train were very different.

I saw young people going out on dates, young families with kids, and older people. After the conversation, we got on the train and were shown to our seats.

Before the train started to move, the waiters quickly went around and offered coffee, tea, and water to everyone.

There were about seven different train cars, and each one was different in its own way. The Milo train car was my favourite because it looked so old-fashioned.

But the saloon car, which has a bar, and the open car, from which you can see great views of the countryside, were my favourites. On the other hand, the candy caboose is great. Who doesn’t enjoy sweets?

Once the train was moving, we began the buffet. What a great breakfast! a lot better than most buffets we’ve been to. There was chicken, waffles, omelets, meatballs, perogies, bacon, Greek salad, Caesar salad, hashbrowns, and more.

There were macaroons, cheesecake bits, different kinds of cakes, and fruit for dessert. My favourite things were the meatballs, perogies, and waffles, which I ate with the fried chicken and syrup. So tasty!

Oh, and let’s not forget the champagne! Cheer

Each train trip lasts at least 2 hours and takes people through the prairie, Mossleigh, and a number of old grain elevators. People can go from car to car on the train and look out at the scenery as they go.

There is also live music, like a banjo and a guitar. Then there’s the train robbery, which makes things a little more funny. As you might guess, kids love it. As soon as the train stops, thieves get on and take the marshal.

Then, they ask for donations, which are then given to local groups. As soon as they get off the train, the marshal and the “train police” start shooting at each other to get the money back.

Much More Than Train Rides – Unique Things To Do in Calgary

As was already said, Aspen Crossing is about a lot more than just riding the train. In fact, it started out as a tree farm and is still a place where people can buy flowers and plants.

Now, they have a lot more to offer, like two restaurants, one of which is in a Pullman train car from 1887 that was Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s campaign car in the mid-1950s.

After that, it became the famous Side Track café in Edmonton, where artists like Sarah MacLachlan, The Bare Naked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, and K.D. Lang all played.

It’s finally here, with a lovely terrace in the summer and food that changes with the seasons. There’s also the Bergquist House, which is over 100 years old and has a pub and an escape room!

When we got there, the 85 sites seemed to be about full. It’s very popular with tourists and people who want a fully-serviced campsite near nature that also has modern amenities like restaurants and a unique train ride.

There are three shelters for groups that can be reserved for business meetings, family reunions, or any other type of group gathering.

There are sani-dump stations, modern showers, flushing toilets, group camping, fully maintained sites, and places to do laundry. Plus, the kids like to run out to greet the train when it comes.

Aspen Crossing Caboose Cabins

They also have three different caboose cabins for people who want something different. You can sleep on a historic train and still have all the comforts of a modern hotel.

You also have your own deck outside for sunbathing and a fire pit for toasting marshmallows with friends, family, or even coworkers late at night and making new memories.

What a “glamping” experience!

Aspen Crossing is a great place for the whole family, whether you’re going across the province or just stopping by Calgary.

They have something for everyone, whether you want to take a scenic train ride or do something like the Champagne Brunch.
